Viktor Silberer, Hotelier

Exhibition at the Bonartes Photo Institute "Only the Biggest Construction Sites – Marianne Strobl's Photo Campaigns" 13. 8. to 21. 11. 2025

For advertising purposes, Viktor Silberer, Vienna city councilor and successful hotelier in the town of Semmering, had Marianne Strobl photograph postcard motifs around 1900. For his residence there, a “little castle” imitating Neuschwanstein (complete with central heating and bathrooms with the latest technology), and his new restaurant in Vienna’s city center, he commissioned sumptuous albums. In spectacular ”magnesium flash photographs“, Strobl staged staff and guests to document the elaborate furnishings of the “St. Anna-Hof,” designed by Helmer & Fellner in old German style, while in full operation. The establishment’s electric lighting (located also in its windowless basement), which was described in sensational terms in press reports, was insufficiently bright for photography.
