Private Living
Exhibition at the Bonartes Photo Institute "Only the Biggest Construction Sites – Marianne Strobl's Photo Campaigns" 13. 8. to 21. 11. 2025
Growing mobility and enthusiasm for technical innovations around 1900 characterized not only industry and commerce but also numerous private citizens of the city. Before moving to a new apartment, however, many people – such as the parents of composer Alban Berg – considered it important to have their old home documented (including casual staging of family members) by a specialist in flash photography such as Marianne Strobl.
During renovations and modernization of the villa and townhouse of banker and art patron Josef Kranz, it was probably the responsible architect, Josef Strnad, who had Strobl document the progress of furnishing and decoration work from quite unusual angles. Much later, he himself used the images to illustrate a monograph about his work.
